A Fun-Filled Program for Sisters and Brothers of Children with Special Needs: Sibshops Fall Session Open for Registration
Internationally recognized program, Sibshops, begins in Calgary in October, providing a pedal-to-the-medal, fun, facilitated program for children who have a sibling with a disability. This 8-week program begins on Monday, October 20 and is hosted by Connections.
Children, ages 8 to 12, love the program because they get to let loose with fun games and activities. Parents love the program because it offers a chance to focus on the child in the family without a disability and, while having fun, the participants also develop their empathy for their sibling. Often for the first time, these children have peers – others who truly understand their family’s special challenges.
A common sentiment among all of the participants is that they feel safe and trusting at Sibshops, and found that others understood what it was like to have a sibling with special needs. One girl commented, “I feel like I can be bullied at school and don’t fit in. When I come here on Monday nights, I feel like I finally found a place where I belong.”
Families who would like to register their son or daughter for Sibshops this fall can contact Connections before October 6. On Monday, October 6th at 6 pm, parents have an orientation while the participants begin the program. For seven Mondays from October 20 to December 1, the participants continue the fun with facilitated discussions and games.
Registration is $80 and the program is held at Centre Street Church, 4120 Centre Street North.
